MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 29, 2022) - The Webber International University women's volleyball team traveled to St. Thomas University to face the Bobcats for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors struggled to gather any offense momentum in the match and ultimately fell 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 25-19).
The Warriors (13-14 overall, 3-9 SUN) hit just .085% for the match and was outnumbered 52-37 in kills by the Bobcats (16-4, 11-1). St. Thomas currently sits atop the Sun Conference rankings in first place and was receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll.
St. Thomas took an early advantage in the first set, leading 6-1 before a 10-2 run by the Warriors saw them take the lead 11-8. The Bobcats came back to tie things up as the two teams traded blows back-and-forth. Tied at 22, a kill from
Nadia Reid was responded with back-to-back kills from St. Thomas followed by an attack error to end the set 25-23.
The Warriors looked much more aggressive in the second set as they led 9-8 before scoring seven-in-a-row to take a commanding 16-8 advantage. From there on, Webber held off the Bobcats and completed the set two victory to even the match up at one apiece.
The third set saw big momentum swings in either direction with the Warriors trailing by just one at 15-14. However, the Bobcats then found their groove offensively and went on a 10-2 run to end the set, regaining the match lead 2-1.
Good attacking play led to an early 6-4 lead for the Warriors in the fourth set, but another big 7-0 run by St. Thomas saw it take the lead, 11-6. The Bobcats began to build upon that lead as the set progressed, leading by as many as eight and held set-advantage at 24-16. The Warriors then scored three-straight but it was too little too late as St. Thomas closed out the victory.
Bailey Sikkema led the Warriors with 14 kills and added 19 digs to earn her fourth double-double of the season so far. She was followed by
Teodora Ranitovic with eight kills and
Cintia Lorena and Reid each with five. Reid also led the team in digs with 20, the second-highest total in a single match of her career.
Amanda Vega led the way in assists with 17 in total for the match while adding 14 digs for her eighth double-double on the year. Ranitovic once again led the team in total blocks with six, bringing her season total to 86, good for second-most in the Sun Conference.
Next up, the Warriors will now travel to Southeastern University to battle the Fire on the road after winning their home matchup against them 3-1 earlier in the year. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, November 2nd at 7 p.m. Webber will then return home for its Senior Day and final match of the regular-season against Warner University on Saturday, November 5th at 6 p.m.
