Men's Soccer Drops Tight 2-1 Match to Southeastern

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 27, 2022) - The Webber International University men's soccer team hosted the Southeastern University Fire in a conference clash on the Warrior Grass Field. A late goal from the Fire earned them the victory, 2-1.

It was an even match as the two sides battled for positioning in the upcoming Sun Conference tournament. Heading into the match, the Warriors (8-3-1 overall, 3-3-1 SUN) were in fourth place while Southeastern (9-3-3, 4-1-1) sat just behind in fifth.

It was a fairly even first half, with Southeastern having more of the attacking opportunities. The Fire outshot the Warriors 13-2 in the opening half, although only outnumbering Webber 3-1 in shots on target. The Warriors did not get their first shot on goal until just before the halftime break as the match remained scoreless.

Webber began the second half looking much more aggressive with its attacking play. It did not take long for the Warriors to get their goal as Luke Piveral came down the wing and laid the ball across for Joseph O'Sullivan who fired a strong shot into the bottom corner of the goal, earning a 1-0 lead for the home team. In the 57th minute, fortune struck Southeastern as a shot on goal from a relatively sharp angle, happened to deflect off the head of another Fire-attacker and into the back of the net to level the match.

Both teams spent the remainder of the second half pushing for a winner. Unfortunately, it was Southeastern that scored a late goal in the 83rd minute on a counter-attack from just inside the 18-yard box.

O'Sullivan scored the lone-goal for the Warriors, making him the sole top goal scorer with eight on the year. He also leads the team in total goal contributions with 10, followed by Luke Piveral, Marc Bonafe, and Dozie Ozo-Udeze all with eight goal contributions each. Freshman Gianni Honsel spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Warriors, making some outstanding saves and tallying a season-high 10 for the match.

Next up, the Warriors will play the second leg of the Crooked Lake Cup against rivals, Warner University, for their final regular-season match. It will also be Senior Day for Webber as kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4th.
