BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 23, 2022) - In its second match of the week, the Webber International University men's soccer team returned home to take on the No. 5 Keiser University Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors were held scoreless as the Seahawks picked up the 3-0 victory to confirm themselves as regular-season Sun Conference champions.
The Warriors (8-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 SUN) were held to just two shots on goal for the match while the Seahawks (10-0-2, 7-0-0) generated 10 shots on target.
The match began as a battle in the midfield with both teams trying to build from the back. Keiser had the first two shots of the match, but both would be blocked by the Warrior defense. Then in the 13th minute, Webber came inches from taking a 1-0 lead as a shot from
Joseph O'Sullivan from just outside the box rattled off the post. The first goal came in the 17th minute as the Seahawks' winger drove into the box and laid the ball back to an on-rushing attacker for a simple finish.
In the 34th minute, a shot from
Prince James would force a save out of the Keiser goalkeeper. Less than five minutes later, the Seahawks doubled their lead on a counter-attack that ended with another goal.
The only other goal-scoring opportunity for Webber did not come until the 69th minute on a corner as the ball fell to
Isaac Thomas who fired off a shot that was saved. The Seahawks scored a third in the 82nd minute to put the match beyond any doubt.
Thomas and James had the only two shots on goal for the Warriors but it was O'Sullivan who came the closest to scoring in the first half. Despite allowing three goals in the match,
Gianni Honsel made some outstanding saves to keep Webber within touching distance for the majority of the match. He tallied seven saves in total, a single-match season-high for him.
The Warriors are back in action this coming Wednesday, October 26th, as they host the Southeastern University Fire at 3:30 p.m. It will be a big match for Webber as they currently sit just ahead of the Fire in the conference standings in third place.
