BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 15, 2022) - The Webber International University women's soccer team hosted the Thomas University Night Hawks on Saturday morning in what was Senior Day for the Warriors. A mostly defensive match would end in a 1-1 draw after regulation.
It is the second tie in a row for the Warriors (7-1-2 overall, 1-1-2 SUN) after a scoreless draw with No. 9 Southeastern. Thomas (6-2-3, 1-0-2) outshot Webber 19-7 in total shots but only had a slight advantage in shots on target 8-7.
The match began with possession trading back and forth between the two sides. The Warriors would have the first shot of the match but it would not come until the 19th minute, an effort from
Leah McDaid would be saved by the Night Hawk goalie. That would be the only shot of the half for Webber as Thomas took three shots the remainder of the half but only one of which would need saving by senior
Cameron Laine.
The Night Hawks came out of the halftime break much more aggressive on offense as they fired off five shots in just over seven minutes. As the second half continued, both defenses became more stretched and opportunities began to arise for both sides. In the 63rd minute, substitute
Becky Wilkins would put in a tackle to win the ball back deep in Thomas' half. She would get herself into some open space and rifle a long-shot from just outside the box into the left-hand side of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted just 23 seconds, as following the restart, the Night Hawks would quickly play the ball forward and find themselves in a one-on-one goal scoring opportunity that was converted by the Thomas attacker. Both teams would push for a goal to try and grab the win in the final minutes but both were unable to as the match ended in a draw.
Wilkins had the lone goal for the Warriors on her long-distance effort in the second half for her second goal of the season so far. McDaid led the team in both shots and shots on goal with two each. Laine tallied a total of seven saves between the sticks and helped to keep the match level, making two key saves in the final two minutes.
Next up, the Warriors will face top-25 opposition for the third time this season, this time in the form of the No. 12 SCAD Bees. It will be a road matchup on Thursday, October 20th at 7 p.m. in Savannah, Georgia.
