BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 13, 2022) - Facing top-25 opposition for the second match in a row, the Webber International University women's soccer team hosted the No. 9 Southeastern University Fire on Thursday afternoon. In the end, there were no goals scored in a defensive stand-off and the Warriors and Fire ended in a tie after 90 minutes of play.
Southeastern (8-1-2 overall, 2-0-1 SUN) had the majority of possession as well as scoring opportunities in the match, but the Warriors (7-1-1, 1-1-1) defense stood strong in a tough conference matchup against a nationally-ranked opponent.
It was one-way action to start off the match as the Fire had the first seven shots. Three of those seven shots would need saving by goalkeeper
Cameron Laine. Webber did not get its first shot until just over 22 minutes into the match, an effort from
Hayden Rupe that ended up wide of the target. Southeastern had two more shots on goal in the half but Laine would be in the way of both. A long-distance shot from
Deborah Guillen in the 43rd minute would be the first shot on target for the Warriors, although it was a relatively simple save for the Southeastern goalie.
Webber would begin the second half with a bit more offensive prowess with three shots in the first 16 minutes. Only one of those three shots would threaten the goal, however, another long shot from Guillen but it would be straight at the keeper. The Warriors would not have another shot for the remainder of the match. The majority of play occurred in the midfield as both sides would trade possession back-and-forth. The Fire had eight shots in total for the second half but the Warriors were able to keep them at bay and hold on for a draw for their first of the season.
The source of Webber's offense came primarily through Guillen, Rupe, and
Brazil Clark. The back four of
Emilie Velez, Marta Galvao,
Hannah Vigotty, and
Hannah Esson played all 90 minutes in defense, putting in a strong performance to help earn the clean sheet. Behind them was Laine between the sticks, tallying eight saves in total for the match.
Next up, the Warriors will face Thomas University for their Senior Day on Saturday, October 15th at 11 a.m. on the Warrior Grass Field.
