Bats kept quiet as Warriors fall to Crooked Lake rivals

LAKE WALES, Fla. (January 30, 2022) - Following a doubleheader sweep to open the 2022 season, the Webber International University baseball team traveled to its biggest rival, Warner University, for a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The majority of the game was tight, but the Royals' pitching kept Webber quiet in a 6-0 defeat for the Warriors.

Dylan Martin would start on the mound for the Warriors (2-1 overall), getting into an early rhythm, going 1-2-3 in the first two innings. The Royals (1-0) would change pitchers in the top of the fourth inning to Ryley Rozar. He would strike out the first Warrior, but walk the next two before striking out another. Luis Acevedo would get hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Webber with two outs. However, Rozar would strike out another, leaving the bases loaded for the Warriors.

The Royals would earn their first run in the bottom of the sixth after leading off the inning with a single. The runner advanced to second on a wild pitch and then a fly out to right field had the runner tag up and heading to third. A bad throw from the Warrior-right fielder would allow the runner to advance home, scoring the first run of the game for Warner. The Royals would add four more runs in the bottom of the seventh on four hits, one error, and leaving one man on base. One more run in the bottom of the eighth would give Warner a six-run lead.

A double from Tyren Milliner in the seventh inning and a single from Christian Martin in the eighth inning would be the only hits in the game for the Warriors. D. Martin did well in his first appearance this season despite getting the loss, giving up one run on two hits and striking out six in his six innings of action.

The Warriors now have back-to-back doubleheaders against the University of Fort Lauderdale on Friday and Saturday, February 4th and 5th. First pitch of game number one on Friday is set for 4 p.m.
