BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 29, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team opened its 2022 season on Friday evening as they hosted Florida National University in a doubleheader. The strength of the Warriors' pitching was on full display as they gave up just one hit between the two games, earning two shutout victories to begin the season.
Game one started as a bit of a pitching battle between
Xavier Rodriguez and the Conquistadors (0-2 overall).
Luis Acevedo would get the first base hit of the new season for the Warriors (2-0) with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Acevedo would steal second base, putting him in scoring position but a fly out would end the inning. X. Rodriguez was firing on all cylinders, striking out five batters through four innings of work without giving up a single hit.
The top of the fifth inning saw Florida National earn its first hit of the game, however, the next batter would ground into a double-play and a fly out to right field would end the inning. With one out in the bottom of the fifth,
Drake Dobyanski would single and advance to second on a bad throw to first base. Christian Martin would then smack a triple into the gap and score Dobyanski in the process.
Kenny Rodriguez would then single, scoring Martin and earning Webber a 2-0 lead. X. Rodriguez would continue dealing, going 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth and seventh innings.
Martin led the Warriors offensively, going two for three with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. K. Rodriguez finished one for two with an RBI as well.
The Warriors had the bats working early in game number two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Webber loaded the bases with one out and a pass ball would score Martin from third for the first run of the game.
Tyren Milliner would ground out to first base, scoring K. Rodriguez and a single from Acevedo would score
Ian Kalman. Webber would score another run in the third inning after a solo home run from K. Rodriguez soared to straight-away left field. Two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings would put the Warriors up by six, virtually sealing the victory.
Drake Kasparek started a little slow on the mound but found his groove, striking out six in his five innings of action.
Dawson Young would relieve Kasparek in the sixth inning, striking out two and
Praxie Vigil would close out the seventh inning. The three pitchers would combine for a no-hitter and award Webber the two-game sweep over the Conquistadors.
Next up, the Warriors will face their Crooked Lake rival Warner University on Saturday, January 29, at 1 p.m. in Lake Wales, Florida.
