BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 22, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team faced the Ave Maria University Gyrenes for the second time in the 2021-22 season, this time as the hosts on Saturday afternoon. A strong third quarter gave the Warriors the edge they needed to earn the 90-72 victory and continue their win streak, extending it to seven games.
The Warriors (16-4, 8-2) received a boost of offensive energy off the bench, as they scored 45 bench points compared to Ave Maria's (9-9, 3-6) 16. Webber shot well from beyond the arch, knocking down 11 of their 24 attempted threes while also outscoring the Gyrenes 25-11 in points off turnovers
It was a very competitive game throughout the first half as Webber took an early three-point lead in the first quarter. The two teams would trade blows over the course of the second quarter as the Warriors would reach the halftime break with their three-point lead still intact. The third quarter would begin with a surge of offense from Webber as it went on an 11-4 run over the first four and a half minutes, extending the lead to 10 points. Continuing to build upon the lead into the fourth quarter, the Warriors would lead by as many as 26 with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
Offensively,
Eletra Graham would come off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 22 points. It was the second time this season she has scored over 20 points in a game. Graham shot 50 percent from downtown and six of her seven field goals were from three-point range. She was followed by
Samantha Pacheco who had her second-highest scoring output so far this season with 16.
Jaida Burgess finished with a near triple-double after tallying 13 points and team-highs in rebounds (9) and assists (8).
LeAndra Franklin contributed in many categories with 12 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and five steals. Franklin ranks third in the nation in steals per game, averaging 3.8.
Next up for Webber, the team hosts Keiser University on Thursday, February 3, at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors fell in a tight three-point loss to the Seahawks on the road earlier in the season, so they will be looking to right the ship as well as continue to extend their current winning streak.
