Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors' comeback effort falls short in loss to Ave Maria

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 22, 2022) - The Webber International University men's basketball team matched up against the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University for the second time this season, this time at home inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. After falling by 22 points on the road earlier in the season, a second-half comeback from the Warriors fell just short in a 75-66 defeat on Saturday evening.

Webber (7-15 overall, 2-8 SUN) was slightly outrebounded, 37-34 by the Gyrenes (13-8, 6-4) but the difference was made in points off turnovers where Ave Maria had the upper hand 18-5 over the Warriors. The Gyrenes also made it to the free throw line 19 times, scoring 15 of those attempts while the Warriors were just 7-12 from the charity stripe.

The first half saw the Warriors have a slow start offensively, shooting just over 30 percent from the field. The score would be tied at 18 with just over five and a half minutes to go, however, Ave Maria would go on a 15-7 run to end the half giving them an eight-point lead at the halftime break. The Gyrenes would build upon their lead in the beginning of the second half, leading by as many as 17 points with just under eight minutes left.

The Warriors would then go on a 13-0 run led by Tiyon Martin and Jaylon Myles to cut the Ave Maria lead to just four points with 2:51 left on the clock. After trading a couple baskets back-and-forth, it was back to a four-point game at 67-63 with just over a minute and a half to go. A missed three-point shot from Webber would give the Gyrenes possession and the Warriors would be forced to foul to try and stay in the game. Ave Maria would convert its free throws and melt off the rest of the clock to see out the victory.

Tiyon Martin would lead the team in scoring with 23 points, tying his season high. Martin also led the team with three steals on the defensive end. He was followed by Jaylon Myles with 17 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the field. Chinehcerem Anukaenyi grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, making it his eighth game this season getting 10 or more rebounds.

Jaylon Myles was honored before the start of the game for surpassing 1,000 career points at Webber, making him the eighth player in Warrior history to achieve the milestone. Congratulations Jaylon!

The Warriors now host the Seahawks of Keiser University on Thursday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
