SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (January 20, 2022) - The Webber International University men's volleyball team began its three-game road trip in California Thursday afternoon as it faced The Master's University Mustangs, ultimately falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 26-24).
Webber (1-2 overall) was outhit in the match, struggling with a hitting percentage of .000 percent while the Mustangs (2-0) had a hitting percentage of .286 in total for the match.
The Mustangs took a slight lead at the beginning of set number one at 11-8. The Master's then went on a 4-0 run to extend its lead to 15-8 and the Warriors would be unable to recover the deficit. The Mustangs would jump out to a 7-1 lead in the second set, proving to be too much for Webber to overcome as it fell behind two sets to zero. The third set would prove to be the most competitive but still, the Warriors would come up just short in the set 26-24, sealing the sweep for the Mustangs.
The Warriors were led by
Chris Ludwig,
Gunter Perea Quevedo, and
Tinaishe Ndavazocheva each with four kills followed by
Lachlan Diamond and
Daniel Hermida each with three.
Peyten Young led the team with 18 assists in total for the match as well as leading the team in digs with nine. Defensively, Ndavazocheva led the team with three total blocks.
"The team struggled from the beginning to find their rhythm," said Head Coach
Carlos Jimenez after the match. "We tried to make some key adjustments to generate more scoring opportunities, but the reality is that we failed to implement the system that allows for stability both offensively and defensively. The team needs to display who they really are rather than let other teams dictate what we do. We hope for a better outcome from the next two matches."
Next up, the Warriors travel to Encinitas, California to match up against the University of Saint Katherine on Friday, January 21, at 5 p.m. PST followed by their final game of the road trip against California Lutheran on Saturday, January 22.
