BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 14, 2021) – It was a back-and-forth affair on Saturday afternoon on the Warrior Turf Field, as the Webber International University football team hosted No. 13 Georgetown College, resulting in a 31-21 defeat for the Warriors.
Â
Georgetown (2-0 overall) would start their opening drive strong after a 41-yard pass would see the Tigers have a 1st and goal at the Webber (0-2) 8-yard line. However, the Warriors goal-line defense would stand strong, forcing a turnover on downs after an incomplete pass from Georgetown.
Â
Late in the first quarter, a costly turnover from the Warriors would see them hand the ball over to Georgetown in their own half. The Warrior's defense would force a 3rd and 15, but a 40-yard touchdown pass would see the Tigers strike first and take the lead 7-0.
Â
The Warriors would have their chance to respond, as the first offensive play from the Tigers in the second quarter would be intercepted by sophomore
Tyrese Sanders and returned 24 yards to the Georgetown 2-yard line. The very next play, the Warriors would even the score after a 2-yard pass from
Cody Braden would find
Jacob Moss for his second receiving touchdown this season.
Â
The Tigers would score on their next drive of 10 plays and 75 yards to retake the lead, 14-7.
Â
Kristofer Sippel Jr. would start the second half at quarterback for the Warriors. During his second drive of the 3rd quarter, Sippel completed a 43-yard pass to Frederick Curry down to the Georgetown 19-yard line. Another 16-yard completion to
Freddie Hughley put the Warriors on the one-yard line with a 1st and goal. Following a four-yard loss, Sippel would complete a five-yard touchdown pass to
Rashaud Freeman to level the score yet again at 14-14. It would be the first touchdown pass of Sippel's career as a Warrior.
Â
On the very next drive, senior
Christopher L. Williams II would intercept a pass from the Georgetown quarterback and return it 11-yards. But after a three and out, the Tigers would block the Warriors field goal attempt that would be recovered by Webber at their own 19-yard line. Georgetown would then retake the lead, 21-14, after a three-yard touchdown rush.
Â
The Warriors would not go away as they would score on a 10-play, 73-yard drive to open the 4th quarter. A seven-yard touchdown pass from Sippel to
Marvin Robinson would make the Warriors level again at 21-21.
Â
The Tigers would score on their next two drives, first with a field goal to take the lead 24-21. Then a 22-yard touchdown rush with just under a minute and a half would extend their lead to 10, and virtually seal the victory.
Â
The Warriors found most of their success in the air as Braden threw for 101 yards and one touchdown in the first half, while Sippel threw for 188 yards and two scores in the second half. Moss led the team in receptions with six, followed by Curry with five and Hughley with four.
Â
Next up, the Warriors have a bye week before traveling to Kentucky for the second time this season. They will take on the University of Pikeville Bears in Pikeville, Kentucky on Saturday, September 25, at 4 p.m. before returning home for their Mid-South Conference opener at home against Southeastern University.
