BABSON PARK, Fla. (August 27, 2021) – The Webber International University men's soccer team's home-opening contest would end in a 2-0 defeat against the Bears of Truett McConnell University on Friday morning at the Warrior Grass Field.
It was a tightly contested first half as Truett McConnell (1-0 overall) would take seven shots compared to Webber's (1-1) six. Goalkeeper
Alex Marciulonis would be forced to make two saves to keep it level at the end of the half. Webber would have the final two shots in the half, both coming off the foot of
Rodrigo Flores Iraheta who's second effort forced a save less than a minute before halftime.
The Warriors looked to be the better side during the second half, despite TMU outshooting Webber 9-5. The match would remain a stalemate until the 78th minute when a blocked shot would fall to Javier Morales who would slot it home to give the Bears a late 1-0 lead.
Approximately five minutes later, misfortune would strike again for the Warriors as a free-kick from the Bears would be sent into the box and lead to a loose ball that would fall to another TMU attacker who subsequently score the rebound and double their lead.
Webber would try to battle back but it's final effort would come in the 84th minute after a shot from
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni would fizz over the crossbar.
In total for the match, Truett McConnell would outshoot Webber 16-11 in total shots and 7-3 in shots on goal. Marciulonis would be in goal for all 90 minutes and make five saves on the day.
Next up for the Warriors will be another home match as they take on Trinity Baptist College on Thursday, September 2, at 4 p.m. on the Warrior Grass Field as they look to keep their four-match winning streak against the Eagles alive.
