TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (August 24, 2021) – The Webber International University men's soccer team opened its 2021 campaign in dominant fashion with a 4-0 shutout victory over Florida College on Monday evening in Temple Terrace, Florida.
The match would remain scoreless for the first half hour, until the Warriors would strike first thanks to a goal from
Prince James in the 32nd minute. Approximately seven minutes later, Webber (1-0 overall) would double its lead after a goal by
Jesus Chillon, his first as a Warrior, would give it a 2-0 lead over Florida College (0-1) going into halftime.
In all, Webber outshot Florida College 5-2 in the first half and 13-7 overall.
The Warriors would kick off the second half with their foot on the gas and continue to show their offensive prowess. Chillon would score twice more to seal his hat-trick in the 47th and 55th minutes as well as give the Warriors a commanding 4-0 lead.
Webber would have a man sent off with a red card in the 66th minute and the Warriors would be down to 10 men from there on out. However, the defense would hold strong and Webber would seal its 4-0 season-opening victory.
Junior
Felipe Freiria would start the match in goal for the Warriors and senior
Alex Marciulonis would take over between the sticks for the second half. The two would combine for the clean sheet for Webber.
"The boys played very well and the back four were very solid defensively," said Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "We had some great individual performances from Chillon who scored three goals and James with the first goal of the match."
Up next for the Warriors will be their home opener on Friday, August 27, as they take on Truett McConnell University at 10 a.m. on the Warrior Grass Field.
