BABSON PARK, Fla. (May 4, 2021) – The seeding and schedule for the 2021 Sun Conference Baseball Tournament have been set, and the third-seeded Webber International University baseball team will play against fourth-seeded and No. 14 nationally-ranked Keiser University at 6 p.m. to wrap up the first day of the tournament on Thursday, May 6, at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Excluding the shortened 2020 season, 2021 marks the fourth straight year the Warriors will enter the postseason after finishing up the regular season either in third place or tied for third in The Sun Conference standings. During each of the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons, Webber earned a bid to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, and is hoping to do so again this season with a strong showing at the conference tournament.
The Warriors finished the regular season 28-22 overall and were 14-10 in The Sun Conference, the same record they had in conference play during the 2019 campaign. Webber also won six of its eight TSC series this season, and was 20-10 on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field, making it eight straight seasons (excluding 2020) the Warriors have won at least 20 games on their home field. Webber closed out its regular season by taking two of three games from the University of South Carolina Beaufort, including winning 18-8 in seven innings on Friday, April 23, before winning 6-5 in 11 innings in game one on Saturday, April 24.
The seeding for the 2021 Sun Conference Baseball Tournament is as follows:
- Southeastern (18-5)
- St. Thomas (17-7)
- Webber International (14-10)
- Keiser (14-10)
- Warner (13-11)
- USC-Beaufort (11-13)
Despite losing three of its five games this season against Keiser, Webber earned the tiebreaker for third place over the Seahawks thanks to winning two out of three games between the two teams during their Sun Conference series (Feb. 19-20). The Warriors won game one on Friday night 4-3 and scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the first inning, and then won the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday also by a score of 4-3 after a walk off double in the bottom of the ninth inning by
Orlando Pena.
In addition to ranking No. 14 in all of the NAIA, Keiser will enter the postseason with a record of 32-14 overall and 14-10 in The Sun Conference. The Seahawks are coming off a close 7-6 loss at Thomas University in their regular-season finale this past Saturday.
In all of The Sun Conference, Webber is ranked second in opponents' batting average (.255), third in earned run average (4.27), and is tied for fourth in fielding percentage (.959). Keiser, meanwhile, is ranked second in batting average (.325), in runs batted in per game (8.37) and in earned run average (4.03), and is tied for first in fielding percentage (.967).
The winner between Webber vs. Keiser on Thursday will play the winner between second-seeded St. Thomas University and fifth-seeded Warner University at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 7, while the loser will play the winner between top-seeded Southeastern University and sixth-seeded USCB at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
The tournament is a double-elimination format beginning with three games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the championship matchup on Sunday with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
