Softball earns first road win of the season in sweep at Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (April 7, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team played in its first Sun Conference doubleheader on the road since March 10 and won both games by final scores of 5-0 and 8-1 at Ave Maria University.

Webber, which was also announced as receiving votes in the third regular-season edition of the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll on Wednesday, picked up its first road win of the season and saw its record move to 22-16 overall and 9-3 in The Sun Conference. Ave Maria, meanwhile, lost at home for the first time this season and moved to 16-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference.

In game one, Webber got a combined shutout from Jenna Chaudoin (4-3) and Emma Maitland.

Chaudoin pitched the first four innings allowing only three hits and one walk. She stranded runners on second base in three of her four innings before giving way to Maitland, who pitched the final three innings allowing one hit and one walk to earn her first save of the season and third of her career.

In the top of the fourth inning, Webber broke the scoreless tie with an unearned run as Cassidy Roberts singled to right field with one out and then scored all the way from first on the ensuing error from the Ave Maria third baseman on a ball off the bat of Faith Campopiano.

Roberts then scored an insurance run for the Warriors in the top of the sixth inning as she led off with an infield single, advanced to third with two outs on a single by Haley Saylor, and then scored on a single to center by Kyleigh Sprigle.

Then in the top of the seventh, Webber expanded upon its lead even more as Dejia Benn singled up the middle to score Mary-Margaret Maggard with no outs, and then Krista Hoyt hit a two-run double to left center with one out to bring in Juliana Ortiz and Benn to make it 5-0.

Roberts and Maggard both finished 2-for-3 in game one.

In game two, Kayla Swinson (11-2) held Ave Maria to only two hits and no earned runs through four innings while also not walking any batters. The lone run against her came on the very first at bat for the Gyrenes as a bunt single led to an error by the Warriors, allowing the runner to come all the way around to score.

That run, however, came after Webber already led 3-0 after the top of the first inning as Roberts hit another single to lead off the game and was followed by another single from Maggard, which led to a two-RBI double down the left field line for Victoria Atkinson. Alyssa Rodriguez then followed with a double of her own to left field to score Atkinson.

Atkinson got another RBI with a groundout in the third inning scoring Kelsea Friend, who led off the inning with a walk before stealing both second and third base.

Just like Maitland did in game one, Morgan Mills earned the save in game two by virtue of pitching the final three innings. Mills did not surrender a single hit or walk and struck out three for her first career save.

The Warriors would finish with 11 hits in both games while holding Ave Maria to a total of only six hits between the two games.

Webber's Head Coach Kristy Burton spoke following the sweep, saying "Today was a huge step forward for our program finally breaking our losing streak on the road. Our pitching staff as a whole was unstoppable, holding Ave Maria's offense to just six hits on the day. Offensively, our bats finally came alive through 14 innings, having 22 hits and scoring 13 runs on the day. It was nice to see us keep the momentum today, and the coaching staff is looking forward to continuing our success in the conference."

Next up, Webber will return home to Nancy Nichols Field for Alumni Appreciation Day against St. Thomas University on Saturday, April 10. First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. in Babson Park, Florida.
