Softball splits TSC doubleheader at home against St. Thomas

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 10, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team split its two games against St. Thomas University on Saturday at Nancy Nichols Field. The Warriors won game number won 7-1 after scoring seven unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but then fell 2-1 in game number two.

In the first game on Saturday, Webber trailed 1-0 with only two hits to its credit entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but an error on the first at bat of the inning followed by a sacrifice bunt by Kaitlin Cockcroft and a single to third base by Kelsea Friend started the scoring spree.

After Haley Saylor scored the first run on Friend's hit, Mary-Margaret Maggard singled down the left field line to score Friend and put Webber ahead 2-1.

With two outs in the inning, Maggard scored on a wild pitch, and then the third straight walk by the Bobcats' pitcher loaded the bases for Abigail Thompson, who smacked a two-run double to left center field, and was then followed by a two-RBI double down the left field line by Saylor as the Warriors batted around and sent 11 batters to the plate.

After entering the game in the top of the fifth inning and shutting St. Thomas down 1-2-3 and then getting three strikeouts in the top of the sixth inning, Emma Maitland (8-7) then shut down the Bobcats 1-2-3 again in the seventh inning to end it and earn the win in the circle.

Jenna Chaudoin did a good job as the starter, finishing with a line of four hits, one run and three walks allowed through the first four innings of the game.

In the second game, Webber scored first in the first inning but was then shutout the rest of the way, leaving both the tying and winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning before going down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Kayla Swinson (11-3) had a perfect game going until the fifth inning when St. Thomas led off with a walk followed by a single to put two runners on. Both runners would eventually score to put the Bobcats up 2-1.

Swinson finished with a line of only one hit and one walk allowed in four innings, but both runs for St. Thomas were charged to her. Morgan Mills, meanwhile, pitched the final three innings and finished allowing two hits, but no walks and no runs.

After finishing with seven runs on six hits in game one, Webber only had four hits in game two, half of which were from Blakeleigh Boyett.

With the split, Webber's record moved to 23-17 overall and 10-4 in The Sun Conference while St. Thomas' moved to 10-14 and 4-10.

Next up for Webber will be its first stretch of multiple road series in a row as the Warriors play first at Keiser University on Wednesday, April 14 (2/4 p.m.), then play at the College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday, April 17 (12/2 p.m.), and then wrap the road swing at Warner University on Thursday, April 22 (5/7 p.m.).
