BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 6, 2021) – The Webber International University softball team fell for the first time at home during conference play so far this season, splitting its two games against No. 18 Warner University. The Warriors were shutout 4-0 in game number one before coming back and winning game two 3-1 behind a complete game performance from
Kayla Swinson on Saturday at
Nancy Nichols Field.
Swinson (10-2) would finish with seven innings pitched allowing six hits, one run, two walks and three strikeouts in game two. It was her seventh complete game of the season so far as a freshman, and was her second in a row against a nationally-ranked team from The Sun Conference.
The Webber offense, meanwhile, scored twice in the bottom of the first as a hit by pitch by
Cassidy Roberts started a two-out rally.
Victoria Atkinson and
Faith Campopiano both walked to load the bases, and then
Haley Saylor singled up the middle to score Roberts and make it 1-0.
Blakeleigh Boyett then become the second Warrior to be hit by a pitch in the inning, scoring Atkinson to make it 2-0.
Defensively, third baseman
Abigail Thompson shined with a great catch near the fence in foul territory to end the top of the fourth inning, and then in the fifth she recorded a lineout double play to again end the inning.
In addition to making some strong plays in left field, Saylor was the Warriors' leader in offense in game two, going 2-for-3.
In game one, it was
Alyssa Rodriguez who was 2-for-3, accounting for half of Webber's hits. The go-ahead run for Warner came via a squeeze bunt in the top of the third inning to make it 1-0, a score that stood until the top of the sixth inning when the Royals added three runs on two RBI doubles.
Emma Maitland (7-7) finished allowing eight hits, four runs and no walks in five innings before
Dariyen Moss recorded six straight outs in the final two innings.
"We had a good split today against a great Warner team," said Head Coach
Kristy Burton. "I was proud of how we responded after the loss in game one. Our defense and pitching was fun to watch and gave us a chance in both games today. Offensively, we finally got into our style and rhythm with the second game. We are looking forward to our road trip to Ave Maria tomorrow. Go Warriors."
With the split, Webber is now 20-16 overall, 7-3 in The Sun Conference and 7-1 at home in conference play while Warner moved to 21-9 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Warriors tomorrow on Wednesday, April 7, as they play at Ave Maria University at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
