BRUNSWICK, Fla. (April 20, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team earned its fifth conference sweep of the season after winning both games of its Sun Conference doubleheader at the College of Coastal Georgia on Tuesday at the Brunswick High School Softball Field. The Warriors won game number one by a close score of 3-2, and then won game two 4-1 behind a complete game performance from
Emma Maitland.
Webber, which is now 26-18 overall and 13-5 in The Sun Conference, took over sole possession of first place in conference standings over Keiser University. Coastal Georgia, meanwhile, saw its record drop to 21-11 and 7-9 on the year.
In game one, Webber scored an unearned run to take the lead in the second inning while starting pitcher
Kayla Swinson (12-4) held Coastal Georgia to without a hit until with two outs in the sixth inning.
Then in the top of the seventh, Webber added two more runs that would turn out to be extremely important after a two-run home run with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh for Coastal Georgia. After heads up base running by
Alyssa Rodriguez to score from third base on a throw from the Mariners' catcher down to first base, what would be the winning run for Webber came thanks to an RBI-single up the middle by
Cassidy Roberts to score
Krista Hoyt.
From there, the Mariners proceeded to bring the winning run to the plate before
Dariyen Moss came in to pitch and got the final two outs on a 5-4-3 double play. It was Moss' third save of the season and was the fifth of her career.
For Swinson, she finished with a line of 6.1 innings pitched allowing four hits, two runs, three walks and six strikeouts.
In game two, Webber scored in the first inning as Roberts led off with a single and then came home on a single by
Mary-Margaret Maggard. Then in the fourth inning, the Warriors hit three straight singles to load the bases with one out, leading to a fourth straight single, which was up the middle by
Kaitlin Cockcroft to break a 1-1 tie.
In the end, Maggard,
Victoria Atkinson and
Faith Campopiano each had two hits in game two.
Maitland (10-7), meanwhile, finished with her 11th complete game of the season as she pitched all seven innings allowing only three hits, one run and no walks while striking out six batters.
Head Coach
Kristy Burton said, "What a great day for our program. The girls came out to play today and we had a blast leaving it all out on the field. Our pitching staff and defense really helped raise the bar today, holding a great offensive team in Coastal Georgia to just three runs on the day. Offensively, we stayed in control and found a way to get better in every inning. This was a huge road sweep for us and we are excited to bring this momentum into Thursday in another away series vs. Warner. See you all on Thursday in Lake Wales. Go Warriors."
Next up, Webber will wrap up its stretch of six straight road games by playing at Warner University at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22.
