Softball swept at No. 20 Warner to wrap up six-game road trip

LAKE WALES, Fla. (April 22, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team finished up its stretch of six straight road games with a pair of losses at No. 20 nationally-ranked Warner University on Thursday night on Daly Field. In the end, the Warriors were shutout 3-0 in game one before falling 5-4 in game number two.

In game one, Webber (26-20 overall, 13-7 The Sun Conference) was held to only three hits by Warner's (27-13, 11-7) starting pitcher Tiffany Dodson, who finished with the complete game shutout.

After the Royals scored three runs off of Morgan Mills (0-4) in the bottom of the second inning, Kayla Swinson pitched 4.2 innings allowing no runs, four hits and two walks.

In game two, Webber struck first against Dodson as a one-out single by Mary-Margaret Maggard scored the Warriors' leadoff hitter Cassidy Roberts in the top of the first inning.

Unfortunately, Warner responded with a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the bottom of the first and then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Royals added another run with a sac fly in the third, and then made it 5-1 with another run in the bottom of the fourth.

Like Swinson did in game one, Dariyen Moss did a great job pitching in relief in game two, finishing with a line of three innings pitched allowing three hits, no walks and no runs. Emma Maitland (10-8) got the loss after pitching the first three innings allowing five total runs and two earned runs. Maitland only allowed two hits, but walked five batters.

In the seventh inning, Webber started with back-to-back singles by Abigail Thompson and Alyssa Rodriguez. Dejia Benn followed with a double to left field to make it three straight hits to start off the seventh, but the Warriors' lead runner was caught in a pickle between third and home for the first out.

Krista Hoyt followed with a single to left field to make it four straight hits to start the seventh inning, scoring Rodriguez to make it 5-2.

Then after a swinging strikeout for out number two in the seventh, Hoyt stole second base and the Warriors took advantage of an errant throw by the Royals' catcher to score two runs on the play and get to within one at 5-4. Unfortunately, another swinging strikeout ended the game with the tying run at the plate.

Dodson (20-7) finished with another complete game in game two, allowing four total runs, two earned runs, seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

It was the fourth sweep the Warriors have suffered this season, and was their second in Sun Conference play.

Head Coach Kristy Burton said, "We suffered two tough losses today against a great Warner program. It took a while for our bats to wake up, but we are proud of the fight our Warriors continue to have. We are looking to respond these next two weeks before the conference tournament."

Next up for the Warriors will be their Senior Day against Pasco-Hernando State College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, on Nancy Nichols Field.
