Baseball swept in TSC Series of the Week at No. 18 St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 17, 2021) – After falling 9-8 in 12 innings the night before, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team lost its final two games of The Sun Conference Series of the Week against No. 18 St. Thomas University, falling by scores of 7-4 and 10-7 during a doubleheader on Saturday on inside Paul Demie Mainieri Field.

In game one on Saturday, Webber led 2-0 in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Bryan Eusebio and Luis Acevedo, led 3-2 in the top of third thanks to a solo home run to right field by Dominique Collie Jr., and then tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh after an RBI-groundout by Rougie Odor.

However, in the bottom of the eighth inning, St. Thomas led off with a solo home run down the left field line, its second home run of the game and fourth of the series, and then added two unearned runs to go up by three.

Collie Jr. finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks, and Norberto Navarro was 2-for-4.

Bryce McDonald (3-2) pitched the first 7.1 innings for Webber allowing 11 hits, six total runs and five unearned runs while not walking anyone.

In game two, Webber answered a run in the bottom of the first inning by St. Thomas with two in the top of the second to go up 2-1. Those runs came on a sacrifice fly out to center field by Michael Machnic, followed by an RBI-single to right center field by Jacob Bluffstone.

Then after St. Thomas responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, Webber put up a five-spot in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. The inning for Webber started with a leadoff home run to left field by Bluffstone, his first career home run, and also featured an RBI-walk by Collie Jr., two runs on passed balls, and a sacrifice fly to right field by Acevedo.

Unfortunately, the Bobcats answered right back again with three runs all with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Five different Warriors had two hits in the series finale.

Webber is now 25-21 overall and 12-9 in The Sun Conference on the season while St. Thomas improved to 30-16 and 15-6.

Next up, the Warriors will return home to the Heart of Florida Field for a nonconference doubleheader against Ave Maria University starting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. That following weekend, Webber will return to conference action for its final series of the regular season against the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24.
