WEST PLAM BEACH, Fla. (April 14, 2021) – In what began as a battle of the only two teams in The Sun Conference with 10 conference wins, the nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team split its two games at Keiser University on Wednesday. The Warriors won game number won 1-0 in eight innings, but then fell 3-2 in game number two.
Webber's record moved to 24-18 overall and 11-5 in The Sun Conference while Keiser's moved to 19-11 and 11-3.
In the top of the eighth inning in game one, a sacrifice bunt by
Sabrina Hebding moved the runner,
Alyssa Rodriguez, to third base with two outs, and then
Cassidy Roberts singled to left field to score her.
Then in the bottom of the eighth, the runner for Keiser advanced to third with nobody out on a wild pitch by
Emma Maitland (9-7) before she settled down and recorded a groundout to the shortstop, a foul out to the second baseman, and a groundout to the third baseman to end the game.
Maitland finished with eight innings pitched allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out seven to record what was her 10th complete game and third shutout of the season.
In game two, the two teams traded runs in the first inning as in the top of the first,
Mary-Margaret Maggard doubled down the left field line with two outs and then scored on a double to right field by
Victoria Atkinson.
Then after Keiser went up 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Webber answered with the equalizer in the top of the sixth as Maggard led off with a single to left field, advanced to second with two outs on a sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez, and then scored on a triple to right center by
Haley Saylor.
Unfortunately, Keiser started off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to take back the lead, and this time, they would not relinquish it.
Webber's starting pitcher in game two,
Kayla Swinson (11-4), finished with five innings pitched allowing six hits, three runs and one walk before
Dariyen Moss entered after the solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and got three straight outs.
Webber's Head Coach
Kristy Burton said, "Today was two great games for us. We played against one of the best teams in the conference. Our pitching and defense kept us in both games and we were really excited to see the level of intensity we came out with today. We came up a little short in game two, but we are looking forward to getting back on track this weekend against Coastal Georgia."
Next up, Webber will continue its stretch of six straight road games by playing at the College of Coastal Georgia at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 17.
