BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 27, 2021) – One day after winning its series opener over Florida Memorial University by a final score of 8-3, the No. 25 Webber international University baseball team came back to win the series by splitting its final two games against the Lions. The Warriors won game one 7-3 before falling 7-6 in the series finale on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
With its fourth Sun Conference series win in five series so far this season, Webber's record moved to 21-14 overall and 10-5 in The Sun Conference while Florida Memorial's moved to 11-15 and 4-11. Additionally, the game-three win for the Lions snapped a seven-game losing streak for FMU.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one on Saturday, Webber put up five runs as
Rougie Odor and
Dominique Collie Jr. both brought in two runs with singles before Collie Jr. scored himself on a wild pitch.
Odor would finish 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in while
Steven Lugo was 2-for-4 and
Norberto Navarro scored twice.
Bryce McDonald (3-0) picked up the win allowing eight hits, two total runs, only one earned run and one walk through his 7.2 innings to start the game.
In the series finale, Webber trailed 3-0 after a two-run home run followed by an RBI-triple for FMU in the top of the fourth inning, but the Warriors came back to tie it thanks to a two-run double by
Bryan Eusebio in the next half inning followed by a run-scoring double for Navarro in the bottom of the fifth.
Then down 7-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the Warriors tried to rally as Odor and Collie Jr. both walked to score a run and Navarro scored on a fielder's choice by
Victor Florentino to make it 7-6.
The two teams combined for 10 errors in the final game on Saturday, six of which were by the Warriors.
Webber's Assistant Coach
Matt Saliba, who has been filling in for Head Coach
Collin Martin the last couple of the weeks, said, "We did a good job with the first two games winning the series. If we just execute a few simple things during game three, we sweep the series. The guys have to get back to work on Monday and get ready for a good St. Thomas team on Tuesday."
Next up, the Warriors will remain at home on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field for a nonconference doubleheader against No. 12 St. Thomas University starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30. That will be the Warriors' final action of the month of March as that following Easter weekend, Webber will return to conference action against its Crooked Lake rival Warner University on Thursday, April 1, and Saturday, April 3.
