Rodriguez, Eusebio lead Warriors to victory in series opener over FMU

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2021) – Xavier Rodriguez earned the complete game victory and Bryan Eusebio brought in five RBI's to help lead the No. 25 nationally-ranked Webber International University baseball team to an 8-3 series-opening win over Florida Memorial University on Friday evening on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.

It was a great start for Webber, which led 2-0 after a two-out rally in the first inning as Angel Diaz singled to left field with two outs, Dominique Collie Jr. was hit by the pitch, and then Eusebio doubled down the right field line to score both runners.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Steven Lugo led off with his second home run of the season, a solo home run to left field to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Diaz led off with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice by Collie Jr. Then, Eusebio singled to right center before a sacrifice bunt by Luis Acevedo moved Collie Jr. to third and Eusebio to second, setting up a sacrifice fly to right field by Victor Florentino to score Collie Jr. and make it 5-0.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Diaz again led off with a hit, and then Collie Jr. walked, setting up the big blast by Eusebio, a three-run home run to left center to make it 8-0.

Eusebio and Diaz were both 3-for-4 while Diaz and Collie Jr. both scored three times as well.

Rodriguez (2-2), meanwhile, limited the Lions to only one hit and two base runners through six innings, and only two base hits through eight innings before finishing with a line of nine innings pitched, six hits, three runs, zero walks and 10 strikeouts. He tossed 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.

With the win, Webber reached the 20-win mark on the season at 20-13 overall and also improved to 9-4 in The Sun Conference while Florida Memorial, which lost its sixth straight game, fell to 10-14 and 3-10.

Games two and three of the series between Webber and Florida Memorial will start at 12 p.m. tomorrow on Saturday, March 27.
