Men’s volleyball finishes off season sweep of Reinhardt

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 13, 2021) – After sweeping Reinhardt University back on February 20 in Waleska, Georgia, the Webber International University men's volleyball team finished off the season sweep over the Eagles, winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon inside the Sabbagh Athletics Center.

The Warriors won three of their four games during the current home stand, including a huge 3-2 win over No. 14 Life University two days ago, are now back to .500 overall on the season at 7-7, and are now above .500 in the Mid-South Conference at 5-4. Webber is also now 3-0 all-time against Reinhardt, which fell to 8-7 and 6-4.

Throughout the match, the Warriors played their best when it was winning time and when the sets were on the line.

Down 21-16 in the opening set, Webber scored nine straight points to win it. That run was highlighted by back-to-back kills by Daniel Hermida in between two assisted blocks by Gunter Perea Quevedo.

Tied 22-22 in the second set, Webber went up 24-22 on a kill by Chris Ludwig followed by a service ace from Sabian Cardona Martinez, and then a kill by Justin Beecher assisted by Peyten Young two points later finished it off.

In the final set, Webber trailed 22-17 before winning the match on an 8-0 run featuring two kills by Beecher, two more assisted blocks by Perea Quevedo, and then a service ace by Beecher for the final point of the day.

"The guys played well and maintained their competitiveness throughout the match, even when we were down a few points," spoke Head Coach Carlos Jimenez. "We made some key matchups that helped to control the mid-channels and give opportunities for our pin hitters to capitalize with their attacks."

Young finished with 31 assists on the match. The heavy hitters for the Warriors were Hermida with a match-high 12 kills, Ludwig with eight kills, Perea Quevedo with six kills, and Beecher and Luis Gustavo Silva both with five.

Defensively, five different Warriors had at least two blocks as Perea Quevedo finished with six blocks, Beecher had five, Hermida had four, Young had three and Silva had two while Webber also finished with 11 blocks as a team. In the digs category, Ludwig had a career-high 12 digs, Young and nine, and Hermida and Silva both had eight while Steven Bartlett added seven.

Webber worked to limit Reinhardt to only 0.37 percent hitting in the match, including a negative hitting percentage in each of the first and third sets.

With their four-game home stand over, the Warriors will now turn their attention to their Crooked Lake rival Warner University as the teams meet up for the first time in regular-season action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, in Lake Wales, Florida.
