Baseball beats Dordt in first game of RussMatt Invitational; falls twice to NCAA D-II Wayne State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 10, 2021) – The Webber International University baseball team won its first of three games this week at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park, defeating Dordt College (Iowa) 4-2 on Monday night to earn what was its eighth straight win overall at the time. Then on Wednesday, March 11, the Warriors' winning streak came to an end as they dropped a doubleheader against NCAA Division-II Wayne State University, losing 3-0 in game one before falling 2-0 in game two.

Game 1 (Webber 4, Dordt 2):
  • Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Webber took the lead with an RBI-single by Norberto Navarro to score Tavion Williams, followed by another RBI-single by Rougie Odor to bring home Navarro.
  • Odor was 2-for-4 and Navarro was 1-for-3 with two walks, a run and an RBI.
  • Navarro also stole two bases, accounting for one third of Webber's six stolen bases as a team.
  • Starting pitcher Dylan Martin allowed zero runs and three hits through the first five innings while striking out eight batters.
  • Rey Rodriguez (2-1) earned the win by pitching the final four innings allowing two hits, two total runs and only one earned run while striking out nine.
  • Rodriguez and Martin combined for 17 strikeouts.
  • Webber improved to 17-7 overall at the time with eight straight wins and 12 wins in its last 13 games while Dordt fell to 6-6 at the time.
Game 1 (Webber 0, Wayne State 3):
  • It was the 2021 season opener for Wayne State, which begins the season receiving votes in the NCAA Division-II Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll.
  • Webber was held to three hits in the game, one each by Norberto Navarro, Rougie Odor and Griffin Todd.
  • Xavier Rodriguez (1-2) pitched 4.1 innings allowing six hits, two total runs and one earned run while Thomas Lopez Jr. gave up one run and one hit in his 1.2 innings.
Game 1 (Webber 0, Wayne State 2):
  • Norberto Navarro led off the bottom of the first with a walk and stole second base, and Rougie Odor was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher, but those were the only two Warriors to reach base in the game as Webber was no-hit.
  • Austin Dreher (3-2) shutout Wayne State until the top of the sixth inning when a two-out error allowed two unearned runs to score. Dreher finished with a line of seven innings pitched allowing four hits, two total runs, zero earned runs, zero walks and eight strikeouts.
