Baseball falls in high scoring nonconference game at No. 15 Keiser

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 16, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team played on the road at No. 15 Keiser University for the first time this season, but fell 13-7 in nonconference action against the Seahawks on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the fifth and final game this season between Webber (17-10 overall) and Keiser (21-6), three of which have now been won by Keiser, although it was the Warriors who took two of three games from the Seahawks during their conference series.

This time around, Webber trailed 1-0 after the first inning but took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second thanks to back-to-back one-out singles by Luis Acevedo and Victor Florentino, followed by a two-RBI triple to right center field by Bryan Eusebio.

After back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the second inning for Keiser, Webber's starting pitcher, Xavier Rodriguez, induced a pop out to third base followed by a ground ball double play to second base to get out of the inning.

Dylan Martin came in to pitch in the bottom of the third inning and worked around a one-out walk to get out of the third, but then in the fourth, he was unable to get out of the inning before Keiser scored twice on a single to the shortstop with two outs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Keiser got two runners on with nobody out for the third time in the game and then loaded the bases with only one out against Rey Rodriguez, leading to another two-out, two-run hit for the Seahawks.

From there, Keiser put up eight runs between the sixth and seventh innings to run away with it despite Webber scoring four runs during the same two innings.

Steven Lugo hit a solo home run with one out to left center in the top of the sixth before the Warriors proceeded to leave the bases loaded, and then the Seahawks came up with a two-out, three-run home run to center in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Webber scored three runs on RBI singles by Lugo and Acevedo both with one out, followed by a sacrifice fly to center by Florentino. Keiser would answer again in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring five runs on only three hits.

Eusebio finished 3-for-4, Acevedo was 3-for-5, Lugo was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Rougie Odor was 2-for-5.

Next up, Webber will return to Sun Conference action on the road at No. 1 Southeastern University on Friday, March 19, and Saturday, March 20. The two teams will play at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by the doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
