No. 25 softball splits doubleheader with FNU

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' second straight home doubleheader to open up their 2021 season, the No. 25 nationally-ranked Webber International University softball team finished with a two-game split against Florida National University. The Warriors won game one 4-3 after scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but then in game two, they fell 7-4 after a five-run top of the sixth for Florida National.

After both teams scored on wild pitches in the first inning of game number one, Webber (3-1) took a 3-1 lead after an RBI-double to right center by Samantha Rolfe, followed by an RBI-single up the middle by Alyssa Rodriguez in the bottom of the second.

Then after Florida National (1-4) tied it with a two-run hit in the top of the fifth inning, freshman Faith Campopiano led off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle before coming around to score what would go on to be the winning run on a one-out groundout by fellow-freshman Kyleigh Sprigle.

Campopiano finished game one 2-for-2 while Rolfe was 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a walk.

Emma Maitland (1-0) earned the complete game victory after allowing six hits, three runs and four walks with five strikeouts.

In game number two, Mary-Margaret Maggard homered to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2, however, Florida National answered back with five runs, all with no outs recorded in the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Webber did not quit and tried to rally as Blakeleigh Boyett led off with a single to left center and then scored on a groundout by Dejia Benn two batters later. Then with two outs, Maggard doubled to left center and scored on Victoria Atkinson's double down the right field line on the next at bat.

Maggard was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and a double in game number two, and Kaitlin Cockcroft swiped two bases in both games, giving her seven stolen bases already in the first four games of the season.

Head Coach Kristy Burton said, "It was not our best day overall, but there is a passion and fight in this team that we saw for the first time. They are going to fight and compete to the last pitch in every game. It's a very special group of girls, and we are excited to see how we respond as a group after our first loss."

Next up for Webber will be the third of six straight home doubleheaders to open up its 2021 season as the Warriors host No. 11 nationally-ranked Campbellsville University at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10.
