BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 10, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' first of three home doubleheaders against nationally-ranked nonconference teams early on in its 2021 season, the No. 25 nationally-ranked Webber International University softball team finished with a two-game split for the second day in a row. This time against No. 11 Campbellsville University, Webber won game one 3-1 behind the second straight complete game performance from freshman pitcher
Kayla Swinson before falling 9-6 in game two.
In game one, Swinson (2-0) pitched all seven innings allowing only two hits, one run and three walks with three strikeouts. The only hits against her were an RBI-double in the top of the second inning and a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. She faced only three batters in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings before recording three straight outs after the leadoff double in the final inning.
The Webber (4-2) offense, meanwhile, led 1-0 after one inning in game one as
Mary-Margaret Maggard led off with a triple to right field before scoring two batters later on a single up the middle by
Victoria Atkinson.
The difference in the game came in the bottom of the fifth as the Warriors scored two unearned runs, the last of which came on a sacrifice fly to right field by Maggard to make it 3-1.
Then in game two, Maggard continued her great day at the plate and again led off for the Warriors with an extra base hit, this time doubling to right field before scoring on an RBI-groundout by
Kyleigh Sprigle two batters later to again put Webber ahead 1-0, just like she did in the first game.
Unfortunately, Webber fell behind 3-1 after Campbellsville (1-1) scored three runs on what was its first two hits of the game in the top of the third, and then in the top of the fifth, the Tigers scored three more runs on a solo home run to lead off the inning, followed by a two-run homer with two outs to make the score 6-1.
The Warriors, however, tried to rally, and scored once in the bottom of the fifth as Atkinson came up with a two-out double to right center and then scored on a single up the middle by
Sabrina Hebding before Webber left the bases loaded for the second time in the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, a sacrifice fly by
Krista Hoyt led to two more runs for the Warriors to make it 6-4, but then three more runs for Campbellsville in the top of the seventh kept the the two-out, two-RBI double to left center by Maggard in the bottom of the seventh from tying up the game.
In the end, Maggard was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI's and two runs scored while Atkinson and Hebding were both 2-for-4, but it was the runners left on base (11) that came back to haunt the Warriors.
Head Coach
Kristy Burton said, "We are definitely still fighting to find our team identity this season, but I was happy with our overall performance on the day. We need to clean a few areas up, but we are growing and coming together more each day. Campbellsville is a great program with amazing hitters, and they are definitely a well-coached program. I am proud of us for coming out strong to win the first game, but we have to do a better job playing through every out and responding as a team when things don't go our way. We are looking forward to seeing us compete and grow in a few areas."
Next up for Webber will be the fourth of six straight home doubleheaders to open up its 2021 season as the Warriors host the University of the Cumberlands at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 13.
