Baseball falls at Warner in first road game of 2021

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' first road game of 2021, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team fell to its Crooked Lake rival Warner University for the second time this season, losing 7-6 on Tuesday night at Royals Field.

It was the second one-run loss in a week for Webber (5-5) against Warner (3-1) after the Warriors were also defeated by the Royals 3-2 at home last Tuesday (Feb. 2).

In this game, Webber fell behind 3-0 after a three-run home run by Warner in the very first inning, and was unable to cash in on multiple opportunities for big innings.

The Warriors left the bases loaded in the first, the fourth and the fifth innings despite scoring their first run of the game in the fifth inning on a passed ball.

In the top of the ninth with the Warriors trailing 7-3, Angel Diaz led off with a walk, and then with one out, Luis Acevedo walked to put two runners on base.

That was followed by on an error by the Royals' pitcher throwing to first base to allow Diaz to score.

Next up was Ian Kalman, who walked to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Another error by the Royals, this time on a throw to second base by the shortstop with two outs, allowed two runs to score before a groundout to third ended the game with the tying run for Webber on third base.

In all, the Warriors finished with 14 runners left on base in the ballgame.

Head Coach Collin Martin said, "Winning teams have a way of cashing in on opportunities when they're given, and we didn't do that tonight, and we didn't win the game because of it. Baseball is a tough game, and a tough mindset can carry your team when things aren't falling your way. Growth is about shedding the old and welcoming the new. We'd love to see that mindset grow with the physical part of the game. There is no better time to start that with TSC starting up for us this weekend."

Next up for Webber baseball will be its 2021 conference opener as the Warriors look to rebound at Ave Maria University at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 12. The next two days on Saturday, February 13, the two teams will play in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. It will be the second straight season the Warriors open up conference play against the Gyrenes.
