Baseball falls 6-1 in TSC opener at Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. (February 12, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' first Sun Conference game of 2021, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team fell 6-1 at Ave Maria University on Friday afternoon at Bowie's Ballpark.

It was a tough start for Webber's starting pitcher Drake Kasparek (1-2), who started off by walking the bases loaded before hitting a batter to bring in the first run of the game.

Kasparek finished with four innings pitched allowing four total runs, two earned runs and only two hits while striking out eight batters, but it was the five walks that made things more difficult for him.

Xavier Rodriguez then finished off the final four innings on the mound for the Warriors, allowing four hits, two total runs, one earned run and one walk to go along with four strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Ave Maria's starting pitcher, Ethan Wood (1-0), earned the complete game victory allowing only six hits and no earned runs while also not walking any batters and striking out eight.

Webber's lone run of the game came via a sacrifice fly to left field by Luis Acevedo in the top of the fourth inning. That sacrifice fly scored Rougie Odor, who accounted for a third of Webber's six hits in the game after finishing 2-for-4.

Webber fell to below .500 overall on the season at 5-6 while also dropping to 0-1 in conference play. Ave Maria, meanwhile, improved to 2-5 and 1-0.

Game two and three of the series between Webber and Ave Maria will start at 11 a.m. tomorrow on Saturday, February 13, as the Warriors look to earn their first conference win of the year.
