Baseball splits final two games of series with Montreat

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 6, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team finished off its four-game series with Montreat College (N.C.) on Saturday by splitting the final two games. The Warriors fell 6-5 in eight innings in game number one before coming back to win by a final score of 4-2 in game number two.

Webber (5-4) scored early in game number two as Steven Lugo doubled to left center to score Norberto Navarro in the bottom of the first, and then in the bottom of the second, Navarro brought in Rougie Odor on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.

Then after two solo home runs by Montreat (1-3) in the third and fourth innings to tie it at 2-2, the Warriors took the lead back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lugo finished game two 3-for-4 with two RBI's while Navarro was two 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, and Odor was 2-for-3.

Relief pitcher Sean Whalen (1-0) earned the win with two innings pitched allowing no hits, no runs and no walks before Thomas Lopez Jr. finished off the final inning with three straight strikeouts to earn his second save in as many days.

Just like they did in game two, the Warriors scored in each of the first two innings in game one.

Webber led it 3-0 after the first inning on a leadoff double to left center by Navarro, an RBI-single up the middle by Lugo to score Navarro, and then a two-run home run down the left field line by Bryan Eusebio.

The Warriors added two more runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI-groundout by Griffin Todd and a run-scoring single to center by Dominique Collie Jr., but from there the Webber offense stalled as another Warrior did not reach base until the sixth inning.

After an RBI-walk by the Cavaliers to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, Montreat tied the game with a four-spot in the top of the fifth inning that featured a two-run home run to center. The final run by Montreat in the fifth inning to tie it at 5-5 was another bases loaded walk.

Then after Webber left the winning run in Odor on third base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Montreat took advantage with an unearned run in the top of the eighth, and then left Webber with the tying run on second and the winning run on first in the bottom of the eighth.

Navarro was 2-for-4 in game one, and finished the day a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored.

Webber's Head Coach Collin Martin said, "It was a good all-around effort from our guys on the weekend. We felt like we had a shot at winning game three of the series, but we hurt ourselves a couple of times while they were able to cash in. Our guys brought some great energy, and it was nice to see a handful of guys really step up on the mound throughout the weekend as well."

Next up, the Warriors will play in their first road game of 2021, and it will also be their second game of the season against Crooked Lake rival Warner University as the two teams meet up at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9. During the first meeting between Webber and Warner this past Tuesday, the Royals came away with a 3-2 victory after scoring twice in the top of the ninth inning.
