BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 5, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team kicked off its only four-game series of the 2021 season on Friday, winning twice over Montreat College (N.C.) thanks to solid pitching by both of the Warriors' starting pitchers. Webber won game one of the series 2-0 and then took game two by a final score of 10-1.
In game one, Webber's starting pitcher
Drake Kasparek (1-1) and relief pitcher
Thomas Lopez Jr. worked together to toss the complete game, one-hit shutout. Kasparek allowed zero hits and three walks through his five innings pitched while also striking out nine hitters. Lopez Jr. allowed a hit on the first batter he faced in the top of the sixth, but then finished off the final two innings allowing only one hit with one walk and three strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
In game two,
Austin Dreher (2-0) earned the complete game victory with seven innings pitched, seven hits, one unearned run and one walk while matching Kasparek's game one effort with nine strikeouts.
Offensively, Webber did all of its damage on the day in only three innings.
The only runs of the game in the series opener came in the bottom of the very first inning on an RBI groundout by
Angel Diaz followed by an RBI hit to right field by
Bryan Eusebio.
Dominique Collie Jr. finished 2-for-3 in game one, and then in game two, he had the big hit of the game, a two-out triple to left center to score three runs in the bottom of the second and make it 4-1.
Dreher proceeded to face only three batters in the third, fourth and fifth innings before Webber's big six-run bottom of the sixth inning, which featured only three hits but had the second sacrifice fly of the game by
Cale Jones and the second RBI-hit of the game by Collie Jr.
Collie Jr. was 2-for-4 with four RBI's in game two while
Norberto Navarro,
Rougie Odor,
Victor Florentino and
Luis Acevedo all scored twice.
With the win, the Warriors improved to above .500 for the first time on the season at 4-3 while Montreat fell to 0-2 in what was its 2021 season opener.
Next up, the Warriors and the Cavaliers will play two more games tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 6, as Webber goes for the rare four-game sweep.
