BRUNSWICK, Ga. (February 4, 2021) – The Webber International University men's basketball team got off to a slow start in the first half before playing a more competitive second half, but in the end, the Warriors never led in the game and fell 70-57 on the road at the College of Coastal Georgia, their second loss in 19 days in Brunswick, Georgia.
It was a rough start shooting wise for Webber (9-17 overall, 5-11 The Sun Conference), which trailed 7-0 to start the contest and then trailed by 11 at 17-6 with 13:34 left before halftime. The Warriors, who were only 3-for-12 from the field and 0-for-4 from three throughout the first nine minutes of the game, trailed by 13 at 19-6 after an 8-0 Coastal Georgia (9-9, 7-8) run with 10 and a half minutes left until the break.
With 8:31 left before halftime, the Warriors trailed it 25-11 and were only 5-for-16 shooting from the field and 1-for-7 from three with eight turnovers while the Mariners were 11-for-21 from the field with only one turnover to that point.
Webber's largest deficit of the first half was a 16-point margin at 27-11 with seven minutes left in the period, and then at halftime it was 36-22. The Warriors shot only 30 percent (9-30) from the field and were only 1-12 (8.3 percent) from three in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Warriors were much more competitive and did a great job of not letting the game get out of hand, but unfortunately, Webber was never able to get closer than to within six despite winning the half 35-34.
Webber started the second half on a 6-0 run to get within eight at 36-28 with 17:16 left to play.
The Warriors then got their deficit down to six at 39-33 on a 3-pointer by
Marcus Massey with 15:11 remaining. It was an 11-3 run to start the second half for Webber, but unfortunately, Coastal Georgia scored the next five points to start at 12-5 Mariner run to make it 51-38 with 11:30 on the clock. Then with 7:33 left, the Mariners took their largest lead of the second half at 57-42.
Just like in the first half, the Warriors connected on only one 3-pointer en route to finishing the game only 2-for-19 (10.5 percent) from three.
Rasheem Etienne and
Kris Goettert both finished with 13 points while Etienne had five steals and Goettert had a team-high seven rebounds.
Next up, Webber returns home to play its third game of the week as the Warriors host Keiser University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 6. Webber fell 87-80 at Keiser in the first meeting this year between the two teams back on January 2.
