Baseball finishes off three-game sweep over Thomas during TSC Series of the Week

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (February 27, 2021) – The first three-game sweep of the 2021 season for the Webber International University baseball team came during The Sun Conference Series of the Week as one day after defeating Thomas University 10-2 in the series opener, the Warriors again reached double digits in both games and won by final scores of 10-4 and then 11-9.

In the first game on Saturday, Bryce McDonald (2-0) earned the complete game victory, pitching all nine innings allowing eight hits, four total runs, three earned runs and only one walk while also finishing with an impressive nine strikeouts.

Tied 3-3 in the top of the second inning, the go ahead-run for Webber came via a sacrifice fly to center field by Cale Jones to score Victor Florentino.

Then in the top of the fifth, a two-run single by Dominique Collie Jr. scored Steven Lugo and Rougie Odor to give the Warriors some breathing room before a four-run top of the seventh inning blew it wide open.

Offensively for Webber, Norberto Navarro had four hits and a stolen base while Collie Jr. was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. 10 Warriors recorded at least one hit while eight had at least one run scored and seven had at least one RBI.

After recording 10 runs on 14 hits in game one on Saturday and taking advantage of a whopping eight errors by Thomas, Webber scored 11 runs on 16 hits in the series finale, but needed three runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull off the sweep.

In fact, Webber scored a run in each of the final five innings of the series finale, but trailed 9-7 after a four-run bottom of the seventh inning for the Night Hawks.

Florentino started off the eighth inning with a single before scoring on a one-out single by Odor to make it 9-8. Then, after a hit by pitch by Collie Jr loaded the bases, a walk by Lugo scored Navarro to tie the score at 9-9, setting up what would go on to be the winning run for the Warriors, which came via a sacrifice fly to center by Orlando Pena to score Odor.

In the final game of the weekend, six Warriors had two or more hits, and yet again, eight had at least one run scored and seven had at least one RBI. Navarro was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a triple and another stolen base; Odor was 2-for-4 with two runs and two walks; Pena was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a solo home run in the top of the third; Luis Acevedo was 2-for-5 with two RBI's; Florentino was 2-for-5 with two runs scored; and Griffin Todd was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning.

Thomas Lopez Jr. (2-0) earned the win by pitching the final 2.1 innings allowing only two hits and zero runs with only one walk.

With its first series win at Thomas since the 2013 season, Webber improved to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in The Sun Conference in 2021 while the Night Hawks fell to 3-11 and 0-6.

"We are proud of the way these guys showed up this weekend," said Head Coach Collin Martin. "This can be a tough place to win, and that's proven by some series losses we have had here in the last few years. We did a little bit of everything well at some point over the weekend, but the most important factor was how well we responded after small failures. These guys did a great job of picking each other up all weekend and keeping their hand on the wheel until the job was finished."

In only two days, the Warriors will return home to the Heart of Florida Field for a nonconference doubleheader against Bryant & Stratton College starting at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 1.
