Baseball sweeps Bryant & Stratton College

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 1, 2021) – Coming off a big three-game sweep over Thomas University in The Sun Conference Series of the Week last weekend, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team kept its winning streak going, defeating Bryant & Stratton College by scores of 6-0 and 9-2 in a doubleheader on Monday on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.

The story of the day for Webber (14-7 overall) was dominant starting pitching.

First up in game one was Xavier Rodriguez (1-1), who pitched a complete game two-hitter and walked only two batters while striking out seven.

Rodriguez faced only three batters in the five different innings, including in each of the last four innings, and was the beneficiary of two double plays in the fifth and sixth innings. The only runner to reach scoring position against him came via a two-out triple to right field in the top of the third inning before a swinging strikeout stranded the runner 90 feet away.

Then in game two, Dylan Martin (1-1) allowed only one hit with zero walks while striking out 10 batters in only five innings. Martin struck out seven batters and did not allow a hit through the first three innings of the game, and then after a bunt single to leadoff the fourth inning, he earned two more strikeouts to strand a runner on third base.

In game one, Webber led 2-0 after two innings thanks to an RBI-groundout by Rougie Odor scoring Norberto Navarro in the bottom of the first, followed by an RBI-single through the left side by Griffin Todd to score Jordan Mercado in the second. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors put up four runs on another RBI-groundout by Odor, an RBI-single to left field by Angel Diaz, and a two-run single up the middle by Orlando Pena.

Navarro finished 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and a triple to leadoff the game while Tavion Williams stole three bases.

In game two, Webber scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings and led by a score of 7-0 after only three innings. Odor finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's while Williams walked twice and scored twice.

Head Coach Collin Martin said, "I thought we did a good job of keeping the foot on the pedal after our weekend series. Dylan [Martin] and Xavier [Rodriguez] did a great job of controlling the count and pitching to both sides of the plate, and really set the tone. Our offense pushed a few runs across early in each game and really opened things up for us."

With five straight wins under its belt and nine wins in its last 10 games, next up for Webber will be a pair of nonconference games at home against Warner University on Friday, March 5, and against nationally-recognized Bellevue University on Sunday, March 7.
