BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 20, 2021) – One day after winning its first home Sun Conference game of the season with a 4-3 win over No. 15 Keiser University, the Webber International University baseball team came back on Saturday to win the series by splitting its final two games against the Seahawks. The Warriors won game one 4-3 on a walk off double by
Orlando Pena in the bottom of the ninth before falling 5-3 in the series finale on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
After a solo home run by Keiser in the top of the third, a two-run single through the left side by
Luis Acevedo in the bottom of the fourth for Webber, and a two-run homer to right field by Keiser in the top of the eighth inning of game one on Saturday, the Warriors found themselves trailing 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. With runners on first and second base, Acevedo stepped up and delivered a single to left field to score
Rougie Odor and tie the game at 3-3, and then
Orlando Pena pinch hit and smacked a double to left center to score
Steven Lugo from second and send the Warriors to the walk off victory.
Acevedo was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in during game one while Lugo was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but the hero was Pena, who had the Warriors' lone extra base hit of the contest.
Starting pitcher
Bryce McDonald did a great job, limiting Keiser to only five hits, one run and one walk over his seven innings before
Thomas Lopez Jr. (1-0) earned the victory by virtue of pitching the final two innings.
Then in the series finale, Keiser hit its third home run of the day, which was a grand slam in the top of the first inning, and never looked back, limiting the Warriors to only two hits through the first five innings.
Pena hit 2-for-4 with another RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth to get Webber on the scoreboard, and Odor finished 2-for-5.
Relief pitchers
Praxie Vigil and
Rey Rodriguez combined to limit the Seahawks to only one hit and no runs over the final 4.1 innings of the contest.
Down 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Webber had the tying run on first base and the winning run at the plate with two outs, but a fly out to left field ended the game and allowed Keiser to avoid the sweep.
"We were very happy with the way we showed up this weekend," spoke Webber's Head Coach
Collin Martin. "TSC series are all important, and our team brought plenty of energy and we did some great things in all facets. We were in it from the first pitch on Friday to the last swing today. We'll enjoy this one for a minute and take the week to refocus on our next trip to Georgia."
With what was its second straight TSC series victory to open its 2021 conference slate, Webber moved to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in The Sun Conference on the season while Keiser moved to 13-4 and 2-4.
Next up for Webber will be its second TSC series on the road so far this season as the Warriors travel to Thomas University to play at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 26, followed by the doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, in Thomasville, Georgia.
