BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 14, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' fourth straight home doubleheader to open up their 2021 season, the No. 25 nationally-ranked Webber International University softball team earned a pair of wins over the University of the Cumberlands, winning game one 6-3 on a walk off three-run home run by
Mary-Margaret Maggard before taking game two 2-0 on a complete game shutout from freshman starting pitcher
Jenna Chaudoin.
In game one, Maggard led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single through the left side before scoring on an RBI-single to center by
Victoria Atkinson, just beating the throw at home plate to score the first run of the game for the Warriors and tie the score at 1-1.
After Webber took a 3-1 lead on RBI's by
Alyssa Rodriguez on a sacrifice bunt and by Maggard on a groundout in the bottom of the fifth, Cumberlands answered back with its second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left to tie it at 3-3 in the top of the sixth.
Then after both teams went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning, that set up a wild eighth inning that saw the Patriots strand the bases loaded in the top half before Maggard stepped up to the plate with two runners on and one out in the bottom half, and delivered the walk off three-run homer to left.
Maggard was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI's in game one while
Abigail Thompson was 1-for-1 with two sacrifice hits.
Emma Maitland (2-1) earned the win in the circle, pitching all eight innings to finish with her second complete game of the season already. She finished allowing four hits, three runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
In game two, it was again Maggard who got Webber on the scoreboard first with heads-up base running as she singled up the middle with one out in the top of the sixth before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez and then scoring when she noticed the Patriots not covering home plate.
That would turn out to be all of the run support that Chaudoin (2-0) would need as she limited Cumberlands to only two hits and no runs over all seven innings. Chaudoin did, however, have to work around five walks on the game as she stranded eight Patriot runners on base.
With its second sweep at home over Cumberlands in as many seasons, Webber improved to 6-2 overall in 2021 while the Patriots, who swept Southeastern on Thursday before being swept by No. 19 Warner on Friday, fell to 2-4.
"We were thankful the weather cleared up enough for us to get these two games in today," said Webber's Head Softball Coach
Kristy Burton. "Our pitching staff as a whole did a great job of controlling the tempo and keeping the opposing team off balance. Cumberlands is a great program, so we had to play our best today. We did a good job of keeping the pressure on the base paths and hitting as a team when we needed too. We are looking forward to another great week of softball against some very strong programs. See you all again on Wednesday."
Next up for Webber will be its fifth of six straight home doubleheaders in the month of February to open up the 2021 season as the Warriors host No. 12 William Carey University at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17. It will also be Webber's second meeting so far this season against another nationally-ranked team.
