WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (December 31, 2021) - The Webber International University women's basketball team traveled to Keiser University to participate in the Keiser New Year's Classic on Thursday and Friday. The Warriors went 1-1 after a loss to Grace College, followed by a 70-63 victory against Lawrence Tech.
The Warriors (10-4 overall) struggled offensively in their first match against Grace College (10-5) after shooting just 29.2% for the game. The Warriors forced the opposition into 26 turnovers but were unable to capitalize on them enough. The Lancers led from start to finish in the game and held Webber to just 20 points in the first half. The Warriors outscored Grace in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late as Webber fell 77-54.
The top scorer for Webber was
LeAndra Franklin with eight followed by
Amaya Small and
Jaida Burgess each with seven. Small and
Samantha Pacheco both led the team in rebounds with six while on the defensive side of things, Franklin nabbed five steals while Small, Pacheco, and
Dasia Wandick had three steals each.
In their second game of the Keiser New Year's Classic, the Warriors would end 2021 with a seven-point victory over Lawrence Tech. The Warriors were outshot in terms of shooting percentage in the game, but outrebounded the Blue Devils (9-9) 46-41 as well as forcing them into 23 turnovers in total.Â
Small led the way for the Warriors with her first double-double of the season. She finished with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds on the day, including five steals on the defensive end. Franklin finished with 14 points, seven assists and led the team with six steals. She was followed by Wandick with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
The Warriors finish 2021 with a 10-4 record and are now done with non-conference play. Next up Webber will host the College of Coastal Georgia on Thursday, January 6, at 5:30 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
