Fire too hot to handle as Warriors are handed first loss of the 2021-22 season

BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 2, 2021) – The Webber International University women's basketball team picked up its first defeat this season after falling to the No. 4-ranked team in the nation, Southeastern University, on Thursday evening.

Southeastern (8-1 overall, 4-0 SUN) outshot the Warriors (6-1, 2-1) 45.6 percent from the field compared to 41.5 percent. Despite both teams having nearly the same amount of turnovers, the Fire capitalized more often, outscoring Webber 27-14 in points off turnovers.

Other than a 4-2 lead from the Warriors early in the first quarter, the Fire led from nearly start to finish. Southeastern held its largest lead of 17 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. Two three pointers from Eletra Graham and Deja King in the final minute of the third quarter would cut the lead to 10 heading into the fourth quarter, down 54-44.

Back-to-back layups from Rushell Jacob in the fourth quarter would bring the Warriors within six points with seven and a half minutes to go. However, that is as close as Webber would come as the Fire would see out their victory.

King led the Warriors with 16 points on six of 11 shooting from the field. She added a game-high eight assists in the game as well as six steals on the defensive end. Jaida Burgess was the team's second-highest scorer with 12 in total.

Jacob finished the game with a team-high six rebounds to go with her eight points while Amaya Small finished with eight points and five rebounds and adding two blocks as well.

Next up, the Warriors travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to face the Keiser Seahawks for their second Sun Conference game in as many days. Tipoff is set for Saturday, December 4, at 2 p.m.
