MELBOURNE, Fla. (December 19, 2021) - Playing in its fourth game in just six days, the Webber International University women's basketball team traveled to face Division-II Florida Tech in Melbourne, Florida on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors were victorious by a score of 77-70, earning their third win over the four game span.
The Warriors (9-3 overall) were dominant cutting to the basket, scoring 48 of their points in the paint and shooting 50 percent from the field in total. Florida Tech (1-9) outrebounded the Warriors 39-29, but were unable to capitalize, having a field goal percentage of just 36.4.
Webber started slow in the first quarter and the Panthers were off to a hot start offensively. Florida Tech jumped out to a 14-point lead by the end of the quarter at 28-14. Webber began to find its groove however as the Warriors outscored the Panthers in each of the next three quarters. After finding their footing offensively, the Warriors began to trim away at the Panther-lead and cut the deficit to 10 points at halftime.
The Warriors would lock down defensively in the third and fourth quarters, only allowing 21 points in all of the second half. Florida Tech led for the majority of the game until a layup from
Dasia Wandick with four and a half minutes left in the game would give Webber the 69-68 lead. From then on, the Warriors went on a 10-2 run to end the game and see out the 77-70 victory.
A career-high 25 points from
LeAndra Franklin led the Warriors offensively, while shooting 66.6 percent from the field.She was followed by
Jaida Burgess with 15 points and Wandick with 11, who added a team-high six rebounds and five assists.
Deja King finished with nine points and led the team defensively with four steals.
The team now has an 11-day break before participating in Keiser's New Year's Classic on December 30th and 31st. They will first match up against Grace College on Thursday, December 30, at 2 p.m. before facing Lawrence Tech at 12 p.m. the very next day.
