BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 18, 2021) - After a slow start in the first quarter, the Webber International University women's basketball team battled back in a high-scoring affair against Bethel College in the second game of the Warner Classic. The game came down to the final minutes, with the Warriors coming out on top, 97-92.
The Warriors (8-3 overall) forced Bethel (7-9) into an astounding 38 turnovers in the game and scoring 40 points off turnovers. Webber dominated the paint as well, outscoring the Pilots 40-28 in points in the paint.
After shooting just 30 percent in the first quarter, the Warriors found themselves trailing by 18 points heading into the second. Webber improved on both sides of the court, this time holding the Pilots to 30 percent shooting in the second quarter and trimming the deficit to 11 points heading into halftime, 51-40.
Webber would come out strong after the break, having its best quarter offensively. With just under three minutes left in the third quarter,
LeAndra Franklin would convert an and-one to level the game at 65. Just thirty seconds later, Franklin would score another layup to earn the Warriors their first lead of the game. The two-point lead would be held heading into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter began with a 6-0 run for the Warriors after layups from Franklin,
Eletra Graham, and
Samantha Pacheco, extending their lead to eights points. Bethel would eventually retake the lead by one point with three minutes left in the game but it would be responded by a three-pointer from Graham just 15 seconds later, regaining the lead 91-89. The Warriors would continue on a 9-3 run in the final two and a half minutes to see out the five-point victory.
Graham came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with a career-high in points with 28 as well as a career-high eight three-pointers made in a single game. She was followed by Franklin, who scored a season-high 19 points to go with a season-high seven steals.
Deja King finished with 17 points and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. King also played the role of provider as she finished with a game-high five assists.
Jaida Burgess had 13 points and collected four steals on the defensive end.
Webber now travels to Melbourne, Florida to face Division-II opposition in the form of Florida Tech, who is currently on a six-game losing streak. Tip off is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday, December 19. The team will then have a break until competing in the Keiser New Year's Classic on December 30 and 31.
