Men's soccer advance to Sun Conference semifinals after 2-0 victory over Royals

LAKE WALES, Fla. (November 8, 2021) - The Webber International University men's soccer team defeated their Crooked Lake rival, Warner University, 2-0 in the Sun Conference quarterfinals on Saturday. The win secured the Crooked Lake cup for the Warriors who have tallied a 2-0-1 record against the Royals this season.

In what was a dominant defensive game, the Warriors (9-5-2 Overall, 2-4-2 SUN) held the Royals (9-5-4 Overall, 4-2-2 SUN) to zero shots on goal in the entire match.

After battling in what was a scoreless first half, sophomore Jay Skelcher-Maxwell opened the scoring in the 55th minute after converting a penalty kick. In the 63rd minute, sophomore Daniel Perez took a pass from junior Mateo Fernandez Sassoni and buried it in the back of the net to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead and ultimately see out the victory.

"Very proud of my boys. They went into fifth gear against Warner," said Head Coach Neil Cockburn. "It was great to see the passion and belief back in the team and we need to put that into the matchup against Keiser on Tuesday."

Tuesday, the Warriors will be back in action as they travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to take on the No. 6 nationally-ranked Keiser Seahawks (10-2-1 Overall, 6-1-1 SUN) in The Sun Conference semifinals. Last time these two played, the Seahawks came out on top in an overtime thriller, 2-1. Kickoff for Tuesday's match is set for 11 a.m.
