Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors use tough defense to fuel victory over Voorhees College, 80-72

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 5, 2021) – The Webber International University men's basketball team hosted the Tigers of Voorhees College in what was a tightly contested affair, but strong defense from the Warriors helped them to an 80-72 victory on Friday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Webber (2-2 overall) dominated down low, outscoring the Tigers (0-4) 44-24 in points in the point. The Warriors also collected 31 points off of the 24 turnovers they were able to force.

Senior Jaylon Myles led the Warriors offensively with 23 points on 64% shooting. Myles was one rebound away from a double-double while also adding five assists, three steals and a block. Terrence Lakes followed behind him with 16 points and Tiyon Martin with nine. Martin led the Warriors with seven assists in the game.

Chinecherem Anukaenyi made his debut as a Warrior, collecting 11 rebounds and adding six points. Myles had nine rebounds followed by Loro Natana and Jordan Golden each with five.

Gavin Buchanon came off the bench and supplied great defense for the Warriors, grabbing four steals. He was followed by Myles, Lakes, and Martin all with three steals each.

"Good team win against a very tough and well-coached program," said Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge after the game. "We had great contributions off the bench from both Chinecherem Anukaenyi and Gavin Buchanon. I'm excited to see Jaylon Myles be more aggressive on the offensive end and take pride in playing defense. Our coaching staff helped our guys do a great job sticking to the game plan by both attacking the paint and forcing them into 24 turnovers. I believe that our program is heading in the direction we want it to. Now our focus is to prepare for what will be a competitive game at Ave Maria next week. Go Warriors!"

The Warriors will now travel to Ave Maria University to take on the Gyrenes for their Sun Conference opener on Thursday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. It will be back-to-back conference games as Webber then returns home to face its Crooked Lake rival, Warner University, on November 15.
