AVE MARIA, Fla. (November 12, 2021) – The Webber International University women's basketball team earned its fourth-straight victory to open the 2021-22 regular season on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors also earned their first Sun Conference victory over Ave Maria University in the 76-56 win.
The Warriors (4-0 overall, 1-0 SUN) shot 40.5% from the field while continuing to suffocate the opposition with their defense, holding the Gyrenes (2-4, 0-1) to just 26.3% shooting.
Webber started the game strong, outscoring Ave Maria 25-6 in the first quarter of action.
Eletra Graham energized the team's offense yet again, scoring 11 points in the quarter while shooting four of six and converting three of her four attempted three-point shots.
The Gyrenes were able to trim the lead slightly in the second quarter, but the Warriors still held a 16-point lead at the halfway point at 41-25.
In the third quarter, the Warriors dominated defensively and held Ave Maria to just 11 and 18.8% shooting. Webber extended its lead to 24 heading into the fourth quarter and would see out its victory from there.
Graham led the team in scoring with 19 points on 46.7% shooting and 50% shooting from beyond the arc.
Deja King shot 54.5% and was three of four on three-pointers for a total of 16 points.
Jaida Burgess added 14 points while leading the team with eight rebounds.
Defensively,
Triniti Lee blocked two shots and added four rebounds.
Alexandria Lemmon,
LeAndra Franklin, and King finished the game with three steals each followed by
Rushell Jacob and
Samantha Pacheco with two apiece.
Next up, the Warriors will return home to battle the Warner University Royals on Saturday, November 13, at 2 p.m. It will be the first home Sun Conference match of the year and the first against the Warrior's Crooked Lake rivals.
