BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 6, 2021) – The Webber International University men's soccer team earned its first Sun Conference victory of the 2021 season in a tight 2-1 overtime victory over the Thomas University Night Hawks on Wednesday afternoon on the Warrior Grass Field.
The victory for the Warriors (7-2-2 overall, 1-1-2 SUN) was their first against the Night Hawks (4-4-1, 0-2-1) since 2009.
The first goal of the match would come from Thomas in the 12th minute after a through ball would find Regan McLaren who would poke it past the keeper to gain the 1-0 lead. Then in the 38th minute, freshman
Marc Bonafe blitzed down the left side of the pitch and whipped a cross into the box that would find its way into the bottom right hand corner following miscommunication between the Thomas goalie and defenders.
The Warriors would come inches from winning the game in regulation after a shot from
Mateo Fernandez Sassoni would rattle off the inside of the far post with under a minute remaining in the match.
The match would head into overtime, however, it would take just 18 seconds for Webber to put the game away after earning a free-kick that Fernandez Sassoni would send into the box, finding the head of
Leonardo Torcigliani for the score.
Alex Marciulonis would play the whole match in goal for the Warriors, making eight saves along the way.
The Warriors will be back in action this Saturday, October 9, at 11:30 a.m. for their Sun Conference matchup against the Lions of Florida Memorial at home on the Warrior Grass Field. It will be Homecoming Weekend for the Warriors as well.
