Warriors fall to Southeastern in penultimate regular-season match

LAKELAND, Fla. (October 29, 2021) – The Webber International University women's soccer team traveled to local Polk County rival, No. 10 Southeastern University, to face the Fire Thursday night. It was the third time this season the Warriors have faced a nationally-ranked opponent, ultimately resulting in a 3-0 defeat.

The match was relatively even in terms of shots on goal as the Fire (12-3-0 overall, 6-2-0 SUN) slightly outshot the Warriors (10-4-1, 4-4-0) 8-6.

The Fire would strike first in the 15th minute after a through ball was played over the top of the Webber defense and found a Southeastern attacker who would score to put them in front, 1-0. Webber would have several efforts before halftime, but after two blocked shots from Versailles Clark and a saved effort from Solimar Hernandez, the Fire would hold their 1-0 lead at the break.

Just four minutes into the second half, misfortune would strike the Warriors as a shot from Southeastern would deflect off a defender and find its way to the back of the net doubling the Fire lead. In the 71st minute, Southeastern would seal the match after a scoring a long-range free-kick from roughly 35-yards out.

The next match for the Warriors will be their regular-season finale as they travel to Thomas University on Saturday, October 30, at 1 p.m. Webber has clinched a spot in The Sun Conference Tournament but could move up to the fifth seed with a victory and a University of South Carolina Beaufort tie or lose in their final match.
