Women’s volleyball wins thrilling five-setter over Florida Memorial

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 28, 2021) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team traveled to Miami Gardens, Florida to battle the Lions of Florida Memorial on Wednesday night. It was a back-and-forth affair for five sets, but the Warriors ultimately came out victorious 3-2 (29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-10).

The victory for the Warriors (11-13 overall, 2-9 SUN) snaps a three-match losing streak. It was a big win over a Florida Memorial (9-7, 8-4) team that is currently third in The Sun Conference standings.

Heading into the fifth set tied at two a piece, the Warriors started off strong and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Lions would battle back to cut the lead to just one at 8-7, but the Webber would go on another three-point run to extend the lead to four at 11-7. Florida Memorial would battle back within one yet again at 11-10, however a four-point run from the Warriors that included two kills from Bailey Sikkema would seal the set and the match.

Sikkema would improve on her season-high in kills from the last match (14), finishing with 16 on the night. She ended the night with a very solid hitting percentage of .314. Nadia Reid followed closely behind with 11 kills of her own.

Amanda Vega finished the match with 24 assists and adding 11 digs to her credit, earning her eighth double-double this season. Ana Clara Araujo followed behind with 15 assists and seven digs. Kayce Kavanaugh and Emily Bowen both led the Warriors defensively with 12 digs each, followedby Vega and Kiersten Tisdale each with 11.

Head Women's Volleyball Coach Matt Geer spoke after the match saying, "We had an excellent serving and defensive match tonight. We served aggressive and accurately which helped take Florida Memorial out of their system to win in five. We played a very talented team with aggressive attacking, but we were able to play some of the strongest defense we' have played all season long."

The Warriors return home for their next match tomorrow night on Friday, October 29, at 7 p.m. for their Senior Day when they take on St. Thomas University. It will also be Halloween Night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center so fans in attendance should come in costume!
