Warriors take down Crooked Lake rivals in Sun Conference opener, 3-2

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 2, 2021) – The Webber International University women's soccer team hosted its Crooked Lake rivals, Warner University, in its 2021 Sun Conference opening match on Saturday afternoon on the Warrior Grass Field, resulting in a 3-2 victory for the Warriors.

The first goal of the match would come from the Royals (2-4-1 overall, 0-1-0 SUN) in the 10th minute after a cross into the box would be finished off by Sara Machado to give Warner the 1-0 lead. It would only take roughly 30 seconds after the reset for the Warriors (7-0-1, 1-0-0) to strike back. A pass from Domenica Pena would find the feet of Kayle DeLeon who would let loose a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and score for her first goal as a Warrior.

A brilliant solo-effort from Brazil Clark, curling a shot from the left side into the top right-hand corner of the goal in the 28th minute gave Webber its first lead in the match, 2-1. The Warriors would hold that lead for the rest of the half and into halftime.

In the second half, Webber faced a flurry of shots from the Royals, but the defense stood strong. However, in the 78th minute, Warner would earn a free-kick and send a long ball into the box that would be headed by a Royal's attacker into the left-side of the goal, leveling the match yet again.

Approximately five minutes later, DeLeon would have another effort on goal. The Royal goalkeeper would get a hand to the shot, but it wouldn't be enough to keep it out as DeLeon would double her tally for the match and regain the lead for the Warriors at 3-2.

The win gives Webber its first Sun Conference win of the season and keeps the team unbeaten so far in the 2021 season. The Warriors next match will be on Thursday, October 7, at 3 p.m. on the Warrior Grass Field as they host No. 23 nationally-ranked St. Thomas University.
