Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s soccer falls to USCB, 2-1, for first loss of the season

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 14, 2021) – For the first time in the 2021 season, the Webber International University women's soccer team suffered defeat. The tightly contested match ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Warriors against the University of South Carolina Beaufort.

In what was a very physical game, the Sand Sharks (9-5-0 overall, 3-2-0 SUN) outshot the Warriors (9-1-1, 3-1-0) 16-11 in the match. Nine of those shots from the Sand Sharks were on target and senior goalkeeper Natalie Bartek was able to turn away seven.

The Sand Sharks opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Synne Bye-Anderson put one past the outstretched arms of Bartek. Roughly 10 minutes later, USCB would add another goal to their tally after a free kick from Aurya Downey found the head of Mari Kalvatn which then found the back of the net.

The Warriors battled back in the 41st minute when junior Dominica Pena drew a foul in the penalty box.  Junior Brazil Clark would score the penalty past the Sand Shark goalkeeper to cut the lead to just one heading into the half.

The second half saw the physicality ramp up for both teams and the Warriors would outshoot the Sand Sharks 7-6.

The best scoring opportunity for the Warriors came in the final minute of play when senior Leah Hockenberry found herself behind the defense with just the goalie to beat. She would lift the ball over the keeper, but the shot went just wide of the net, bringing the match to a close.

The Warriors are back in action this Saturday when they take on the Savannah College of Art and Design Bees at 11 a.m. on the Warrior Grass Field.
