Warriors bring out the bats in 14-6 win over Florida National

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 29, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team earned its first win of the 2021 season on Friday night, taking game one of its three-game series with Florida National University by a final score of 14-6 on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.

Webber (1-1 overall) scored three runs in the bottom of the first and were off and running from there, scoring in each of the first four innings to lead it 9-5. In the end, Webber finished with 15 hits as a team.

Webber's starting pitcher, Austin Dreher (1-0), pitched 5.1 innings allowing seven hits, six runs and four earned runs before the Warriors' bullpen shutout Florida National (2-3) the rest of the way. Praxie Vigil allowed only two hits while striking out four and not walking any over 2.2 innings, and then Rey Rodriguez finished off the final inning with zero hits, zero walks and two strikeouts.

Luis Acevedo batted 3-for-3, was one of five Warriors with two or more hits, and was one of four Warriors with at least one run and at least one run batted in.

Additionally, five Warriors scored at least twice as Steven Lugo was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored, Bryan Eusebio was 2-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored, Rougie Odor and Norberto Navarro were both 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Dominique Collie Jr. was 1-for-4 with five RBI's and two runs scored.

Webber also had five doubles on the night as Eusebio led the way with two while Lugo, Collie Jr. and Cale Jones each added one.

Last but not least, the Warriors swiped three bases on Friday as Collie Jr. had two and Acevedo had one.

"It was good to get a win under our belts," spoke Webber's Head Coach Collin Martin. "Winning on a Friday night under the lights always feels good, especially when it's game one of a series. The bats showed up tonight, and our bullpen did a great job of making our lead stick."

Webber and FNU will return to the field tomorrow on Saturday, January 30, for the final two games of the series starting at 12 p.m.
